MAISI x Iliad
MAISI Learning School
Ten days in Berkeley on the mathematics of AI alignment, for research mathematicians new to the field. 9 to 20 November 2026.
The fortnight
A survey seminar for mathematicians
Each day takes one area of technical AI alignment and asks the same questions of it: what the objects are, what is proven, what is conjectured or only observed, and which parts of mathematics it draws on.
Lectures are introductory and given by senior researchers in each area. Afternoons are problem sessions in small groups at the board, on open problems the lecturers name, with office hours alongside. The last afternoon is a panel with researchers who came to alignment from mathematics.
Who it is for
Research mathematicians who are curious about AI safety and want to know where their mathematics could be used. No deep learning is assumed.
The fortnight opens the Mathematical AI Safety Institute's first cohort. Mathematicians outside MAISI are welcome too.
What Iliad brings
The curriculum is a shortened version of the Iliad Intensive, Iliad's course on AI safety theory. Every lecturer works to a short brief so that ten days read as one course. On every day, the Iliad researcher who wrote the matching Intensive materials is in the room to run the problem session and hold office hours.
